About
Welcome to Thonglor Thai Bistro, where the heart of Thai cuisine beats in the heart of San Mateo. This enchanting bistro, located at 173 E 4th Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401, offers a delightful taste of authentic Thai flavors that keep diners coming back for more. With rave reviews from patrons, it's clear that this spot is a gem worth exploring.
One of the standout features of Thonglor is its commitment to authenticity. As Phoebe Hung describes it, the restaurant features classic Thai-style tablecloths, creating a warm and inviting ambiance reminiscent of Thailand. From the moment you walk through the doors, you feel enveloped in a culinary journey that is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food.
Speaking of food, Thonglor's menu is a treasure trove for Thai food lovers. Jetro Pirasmepulkul, a Thai local, praises the unmatched flavor of the khao soi, complemented by perfectly prepared pickles and crunchy noodles that provide a delightful texture. Meanwhile, the duck larb is highlighted for its exquisite balance of flavors, making it a perfect option for those who enjoy a well-rounded meal.
The presentation of each dish also stands out. As Nalyssa Spezzia notes, the beauty of both the food and drinks is matched only by their incredible taste. The Green Curry with Beef and Thai Tea showcase the quality ingredients that adjust to every palate, even those with sensitive stomachs. It's gratifying to hear that a meal can leave you feeling satisfied yet light, a testament to the high quality and freshness of the ingredients used.
Don't miss out on the mango sticky rice, as recommended by P K, who couldn’t resist ordering it for takeout! And if you're feeling adventurous, the Spicy Clay Pot—a highlight for Napat Rattanaprakarn—delivers a delightful kick, perfectly balanced with rich, savory flavors that will excite your taste buds.
In conclusion, Thonglor Thai Bistro is a must-visit for anyone in San Mateo seeking authentic Thai cuisine. With its cozy ambiance, remarkable dishes, and attentive service, it’s an experience that will leave you craving more. Whether you dine in or take out, Thonglor promises an unforgettable culinary adventure that transports you straight to Thailand.

“ I'd been wanting Thai food for ages and stumbled upon this spot in downtown San Mateo. I got my go-to Papaya Salad, BBQ pork neck salad, and Pad See Ew. The food is amazing and really authentic. I love their classic Thai-style tablecloths that you see in a lot of places in Thailand. If you're in San Mateo and in the mood for some unique eats, exotic food, or chill with your friends and family, this is a place for you. ”
“ I am Thai and always in search of the most authentic khao soi in the Bay Area. I have been very impressed with the taste and quality, including the pickles and crunchy noodles on top to add the extra texture. The duck larb was also very tasty with the toasted rice powder, and not too spicy or sour. Would definitely come again. ”
“ Yesterday we tried this beautiful Thai restaurant in Downtown San Mateo and I am so happy we did. The food and drinks were absolutely as delicious and wonderful as they were beautiful and well presented. The service was fantastic as well and prices were reasonable for the area. None of this food upset my very sensitive stomach and I felt full for hours afterwards even though I didn't even finish all of my curry. I finished the rest of it today and it regulated my blood sugar very well and returned me to baseline which tells me how excellently fresh, high quality, and real this food is (as opposed to low quality and full of preservatives and fillers). Absolutely excellent and I will be most happy to return and try more things. Things we ordered: Thai Tea, Pineapple Mockarita, Vegetarian Egg Rolls, Green Curry with Beef, Spicy Seafood plate, Side of Fried Egg, Sweet Sticky Rice with Butterfly Pea Flower and Sweet Mango. 100/10 stars. Go give them a try if you are in the area! ”
“ If you're in the mood for some good Thai, this place is worth checking out! The location is easy to get to, and the service was really nice. I got the Khao soi noodles, and they were really yummy! Plus, the mango sticky rice is a must for your sweet treat. I even ordered more for takeaway. I'd definitely go back! ”
“ We had an incredible dining experience, starting with the Roti Fried Chicken crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavor. The Garlic Pork Spareribs were equally impressive, cooked to perfection with a delicious garlic marinade that made every bite unforgettable. The highlight of our meal was the Spicy Clay Pot, which delivered just the right amount of heat, balanced with rich, savory flavors. Finally, we couldn’t leave without trying the restaurant’s most popular dessert: Purple Mango Sticky Rice. The vibrant color and sweet, creamy taste of the sticky rice paired perfectly with the fresh, juicy mango. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. Highly recommended! ”
“ As someone who has been struggling to find delicious and authentic Thai food, I am so happy to have found Thonglor out in San Mateo! The food was delicious, and serves what you would expect in Thailand/Bangkok. The owners are so nice and friendly too! And the sticky rice mango dessert is to die for! Thank you and I look forward to coming back again! ”
“ My bride is Thai so we always appreciate it when our server and she can converse. That level of comfort aside, the service was exemplary and our order arrived promptly. We got there about 11:30 on a Saturday and were a little taken aback that the restaurant was only about 1/3 full. We shared red curry with shrimp (prawns) and pad Thai. Yummy all around ! We'll be back! ”
